This cleanroom is a single-PI effort by Dr. Andrew Sarangan. It was built and continues to operate largely from externally sponsored research.
Dr. Sarangan is a Professor in the Electro-Optics and Photonics Department at the University of Dayton, Ohio, USA. He received his BASc and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo in Canada in 1991 and 1997 respectively.
His current research interests include semiconductor optoelectronics, nanofabrication and computational electromagnetics. Starting from a small research laboratory at the University of Dayton, he slowly grew its capabilities to an advanced nanofabrication laboratory, with expertise ranging from optical thin films and plasma processes to photolithography and laser interference lithography. In addition to maintaining a funded research program, he personally maintains everything in the laboratory, including equipment repairs and building new tools, and enjoys spending most of his time working with his hands and honing his skills. He remains very active in his lab despite being department chair.
He teaches primarily to graduate students. He has developed graduate courses in Nanofabrication, Nanophotonics, Optical Thin Films and Integrated Optics. He is a senior member of IEEE and SPIE and a registered professional engineer in the State of Ohio. He is also an accomplished commercial pilot and certificated flight instructor.
